I was on hiatus, but something so WTF has been happening that I was forced out of my self-imposed exile to write about it.
Those early years of life are supposed to be so innocent, so pure, so clean, but I am finding the complete opposite in East Orange. As a pre-k teacher, I encounter 3, 4, and 5-year olds on a daily basis, and the things I hear them say or see them do makes me continually reevaluate bringing life into this environment.
The thing is, I don't want little kids to know all the words to "I'm Ready" by Alicia Keys. I don't want them to know the latest dances. I don't want the 4-year old girls to wear hyper-sexualized apparel. That's not cute. In fact, it's the complete opposite of cute. It's skanky. And I don't want 4-year olds to be skanky. I don't want a mother's nickname for her 3-year old to be "sexy." It's not right! It's borderline criminal, and if I had my druthers (Yes, I said druthers! Been waiting for a good reason to use that word) these parents would be reported to the authorities for negligence. Or am I being too sensitive?
